Elder Scrolls Online Game Pad Problems

After this year's updates, the Solo MMO Player has found his Logitech Gamepad is acting up.  This is apparently an issue with a lot of players who use controllers, too.  

Reddit has some help.  Thorolhugil says, "Make sure the in-game setting under settings -> gameplay for gamepad mode is set to auto and it should auto detect and switch. Sometimes it's a little glitchy though....

Also! Check the gamepad settings under the game's settings in the steam launcher, and check what checkboxes are enabled in the gamepad settings of steam in general."  

Apparently auto gamepad mode sometimes randomly unchecks, so look at your gamepad mode in both the game and the Steam launcher.

MaggyTwoFlagons reminds us, "Make sure Accessibility Mode is on in ESO settings menu. That tripped me up once, iirc."  ESO confirms "You cannot use a controller before logging into a character unless you enable Accessibility Mode at launch. If you have already disabled this setting, you will have to enable it from the Settings menu."

Brandywjn adds, "Two things to check would be: your controller settings in Steam (and does the controller work for other games), and if you have a good pre-made controller map selected (or make your own).
Also, controller won't work on character selection screen. Need a mouse for that. Maybe confirm if controller works after loading in to a character?"

However, Wallofcans claims the controller will work on the character selection screen. "That's incorrect, and easily missed. There's a setting that you can toggle for kb [keyboard] or gamepad title screen. You don't need a mouse+kb at all for the character select screen. It took me a while to find it."  Unfortunately Wallofcans doesn't say where this setting is located.

New Elder Scrolls Blades Error Messages

If you are here trying to figure out why you can't access Elder Scrolls Blades, Bethesda shut down the game servers on June 30, 2026.  

The last two weeks have been "interesting" when it comes to Elder Scrolls Blades.  I've gotten two error messages I've not seen before.

The top communication error seems to be due to my wonky Internet connection.  Sometimes it's there, sometimes it isn't.  I waited and tried again later and things were fine again.

The bottom message was a puzzle.  I got it when I tried to click on the store for my daily gift.   I decided once again to ignore the Store Unavailable and didn't touch my Apple account and it also went away.  This appears to be a common problem.  I haven't found any solution besides trying again later to date.

Sometimes doing nothing except trying again later is a good idea.

Elder Scrolls Blades "Store Unavailable" Issue UPDATED

I've started getting a new error message when I try to access the Elder Scrolls Blades store from the main menu to pick up the daily free gift.  The message reads:

Store Unavailable

Please verify that you are connected with an Apple account.

This just started right after Christmas 2021.  Sometimes clicking the OK button under the message and then trying to access the store again works.  Sometimes it doesn't.  When it doesn't, try clicking on Town and then access the Store from your character menu.  So far that works every time for me but I've also had it appear when I'm in the game, but trying again usually works.

I suspect this is connected to Apple's Game Center in some way but I don't want to try and access my Apple account just because a game tells me to.  I also don't want Apple's Game Center to bug me to log in constantly either.  Took me eons to get that notice turned off.

Elder Scrolls Blades Fix for Error Message 0-10001-1 UPDATED

After updating to iOS 15, I got error message 0-10001-1 when trying to open Elder Scrolls Blades.  The error message screen is above.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:  Folks, Bethesda has shut down the Elder Scrolls Blades servers as of June 30, 2026.  That's why you are getting this error message.  There is no fix, sadly.  Your game only exists on your device now.  Sorry.

I waited and tried again.  This time I got another error message (above) telling me to either retry logging in or to continue on and set up a new character.  Retrying did nothing, so I set up a new character.  You'll have to accept the game conditions again and go through the brief movement tutorial, then choose a name and attributes for a new character.  At the end you have the ability to log into Bethesda again with your old character name/login, so do so.  (DON'T skip logging into Bethesda or you won't be offered the choice of either character, which you need to retrieve your old character.). Once you do that, Bethesda will tell you to pick either the brand new character or your old one.  Pick the old one and you are set.

Note that some folks on Reddit say that powering down their device and then powering it on again and attempting login to Elder Scrolls Blades fixed their issue.  This didn't work for me.

Elder Scrolls Blades Login Issues after Apple Updates

The mobile Elder Scrolls Blades game has login issues after the iOS14 update to iPhones and iPads on September 18, 2020. 

This is the error message you may see:

"We are currently unable to retrieve your character.  Please try again later.  0-10001-1" 

Waiting and attempting to log in again just gives you the same error message. I finally deleted the game from my mobile device, then downloaded it again.  Once I logged in with my character login and password, things seemed fine.  Hope that works for you.

After the iOS15 update, I got error message 0-10001-1.  Here is the fix.

The Problems of a Solo Rogue in Classic WOW

To get poison capability on your blades during a quest as a level 20 rogue you have to acquire lock picking in another quest as a rogue first.  The practice boxes inside the lumber mill you have to open to gain lock picking have a rare level 23 elite spider camping them, so you will have to level beyond level 20 to kill the spider.  This is a small area with two-three other spiders and some of the small fire-spitting dragons roaming around outside the mill, and a solo player will have to worry about the elite spider re-pawning.  Perhaps some wiser and better player can compensate for these issues as a solo Level 20 rogue, but if you are a regular player like the Solo MMO Player, don't listen to what WOWhead says about the practice boxes quest.

Actually, WOWhead's information is becoming similar to that of a travel guide writing about Thailand who has never set foot there.

Flame Temple Tombs (Guild Wars 2)

An unwary player who wanders into this dungeon can get stuck inside the round room at the beginning with no way out.  After 24 hours you can probably teleport out after the game decides you are no longer in combat.

Guild Wars 2 Starter Guide (Social) and Problems

IGN has written a Guild Wars 2 starter guide for players with an emphasis on grouping, including information about overflow maps, whether you can a friend can play together regardless of race, drawing on the map, etc. Some tips are useful whether you play GW2 solo or with friends.

Around 3,000 players have been permanently banned for buying mis-priced high level karma weapons in huge numbers and creating even higher level items from them.  GW2's developers are going to allow the permanently banned a second chance if they promise to get rid of these items.  They will be allowed back after a 72 hour ban but if you have the items in your inventory still, it's permanent ban time again.

Razer Mouse Plus Razer Keyboard Plus Synapse 2.0 Equals One Hot Mess

Razer's newest innovation is their Synapse 2.0 storage of mice and keyboard settings "on the cloud."  The Solo MMO Player likes their peripherals.  He just replaced his old mouse with a new Razer Naga mouse to work with his two year old Razer BlackWidow Ultimate keyboard.  He downloaded the Synapse 2.0 information and bingo!  His keyboard programming vanished.

Synapse 2.0 recognized his new mouse but not the keyboard.  A call was made to Razer tech support in India but they didn't have any suggestions except to have someone more knowledgable get back to the Solo MMO Player later.  This is an issue the tech support person he talked to hadn't heard of before but he did suggest a hard reboot of the system to see if that took care of what he thought must be a bug.


The Solo MMO Player had extensively customized that keyboard.  He was not pleased.  However, being a smart cookie with extensive experience with engineers who are much more interested in the newest thing than in making sure the product works well, he analyzed what happened from every angle and came up with a fix.

First, he removed the Synapse 2.0 software, then he unplugged the Naga mouse from the RS232 port on the Black Widow Ultimate keyboard's right side and plugged the mouse into another RS232 port elsewhere, then did a hard reboot.  He reloaded the Synapse 2.0 software and like magic it worked.  Even the keyboard programming miraculously reappeared.

Bottom line, Synapse 2.0 can't tell the difference between a keyboard and mouse, even Razer's own models, if one is plugged into the other.   Why Synapse 2.0 decided it would see the mouse instead of the keyboard, I have no idea.  This is a major quality control testing error of a new product but engineers forget what pays their bills when they are dazzled by the Next New Thing.

The Solo MMO Player is happy again but I imagine when the Razer engineer calls, if he or she ever does, they are going to learn from a customer who is knowledgeable, aggressive and not exceptionally polite not to take their eye off the ball.

Skyrim Fixes (PC)

Skyrim has a lot of cache problems.  However Betheseda writes to the Steam cache files often corrupts the cache files.  Once the cache files are corrupted in Steam, it's a fragile system and a lot of problems occur.  As long as you can rebuild the cache file, it'll be ok.

Apparently when you enter a rift, the rift meter appears.  You can see what it looks like on page 30 of the online Rift manual. At the bottom left of this rift meter there's an icon that looks like a coin purse.  On page 35 it says to click on the icon and the bag will open so you can remove items.  Don't let the bag get full or items are destroyed when new ones are added.

Rift: World Event Email and Vendors UPDATED

The Solo MMO Player has just received his email from Trion with the goodie bag that is distributed to players due to the world event problems.  Unfortunately, he can't turn in his otherworldly sourcestones as the world event vendors have disappeared.

All that are left are a cluster of 10 or so players standing staring at the place where the vendors used to be.

Classic.

UPDATE :  The Solo MMO Player found a Defiant World Event Vendor on  April 30 - Go into Manufactory crafting area, take the ramp up on the left.  Go through the door immediately on the left which takes you to the College of Planar Studies.  The vendor Boularna is standing right in front of you.
